Gilbert Baker of San Francisco created the first Rainbow Flag in June 1978. It was originally composed of 8 stripes:

  •    Hot Pink (for Sexuality)
  •    Red (for Life)
  •    Orange (for Healing)
  •    Yellow (for Sunlight)
  •    Green (for Nature)
  •    Blue (for Art)
  •    Indigo (for Harmony)
  •    Violet (for the Human Spirit).

When Baker tried to produce it commericially, the color "hot pink" was not easily available and the flag was produced with 7 colors. Following Harvey Milk's assassination the Indigo stripe was dropped and today the flag has the remaining six colors.
