International Maritime Piracy: Journals and Articles

How to Research the Law of Piracy on the High Seas

Best Way to Find Journals and Articles

After you have visited the various BLS databases, perusing through the hits, one may find certain journal databases better than others. One such journal database is PROQUEST

PROQUEST (subscription database) is the best source for finding not only journal articles, but also magazine articles, trade publications, newspapers, references and reports, and SSRN working papers.

Further, one can set up alerts on the topic and RSS feeds. PROQUEST also allows one to further subdivide the topic into many other headings and keywords, allowing the researcher to tailor as narrowly or as broadly as s/he likes. Most of the articles are full-text, and can be emailed to the user.

Using Topic Guide, one can enter international piracy, and suggested topics will pop up. From there, scrolling down one can see that this topic has been subdivided into even more topics. One labeled "International Law AND Piracy" lists both the ability to view the documents or further subdivide and narrow the topic.

Some notable journals that can be found in the above search include:

  • Journal of Maritime Law & Commerce
  • Journal of International Affairs
  • The American Journal of International Law
  • The International Lawyer

Also, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal news articles on piracy were also generated, making this a multifunctional database.
