Introduction: Accessing "A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: The Saudi Struggle for Iraq" & "National Security Law" (textbook)

BLS librarians are developing this guide to support Professor Heidi Gilchrist's spring 2025 seminar: National Security & Human RightsPlease refresh this web page each time you visit!

Tip: Apply here for a New York Public Library card to have "home access" to subscription databases such as the extensive, searchable Digital National Security Archive (vendor: ProQuest) and the searchable archive: U.S. Declassified Documents Online (vendor: Gale).

How to access A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: The Saudi Struggle for Iraq (2022) (book written by your seminar's guest speaker, Kitty Harvey, former Naval Intelligence Officer):

  • Click A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: The Saudi Struggle for Iraq (2022) > in BLS Library's catalog record for this ebook, click: ACCESS ONLINE VERSION -- (EBC).  If you have not previously used an ebook provided by vendor EBC, you will need to quickly register/create an account.
    • You can access this ebook on campus through the BLS network.  You also should be able to access this ebook in remote locations if you have implemented the BLS proxy server instructions.  (BLS librarians recommend the Firefox Proxy Instructions.  The Library Supported Technology Guide states: "Google Chrome is not recommended for our proxy."

Two options to access this seminar's textbook: National Security Law (Dycus et al. eds, 8th ed. 2024):

  • BLS Library has one print copy of National Security Law in its first floor Reserve collection (call number: KF4651 .N377 2024).
    • Tip: Click here to view: "Opening Hours" for BLS Law School (250 Joralemon Street building); hours when students can check out casebooks and other materials at BLS Library's Circulation Desk; and hours when students can obtain help from the reference librarian "on duty."
  • The publisher of National Security Law = Aspen Publishing.  Aspen created a BLS-specific purchase portal so that BLS students can obtain a 20% discount and free shipping (as of Jan. 24, 2025) on orders of educator-selected Aspen course texts (current editions).  Purchase of National Security Law from Aspen should include immediate access to a "connected ebook."
    • Tip: At Aspen's portal, BLS students need to "Register" with a BLS email address and to select "Brooklyn Law School" as their school in order for Aspen to provide free shipping and to apply the 20% discount at checkout.  If you experience any issues, Aspen Publishing.com provides both “Visit Our Help Center” and “Contact Us” links (near bottom of its web page).
