Introduction: Accessing the Textbook for National Security Law & Applying for an NYPL Card

BLS librarians developed this guide to support Professor Heidi Gilchrist's spring 2025 seminar: National Security & Human Rights.  We continue to update this guide to support Professor Mark Rosen's fall 2025 course: National Security Law.  Please refresh this web page each time you visit! 

  • BLS Library provides one copy of Stephen Dycus et al., National Security Law (8th ed. 2024) in its first floor Reserve collection (call number: KF4651 .N377 2024). 
    • Tip: Click here to view: hours when students can check out casebooks and other materials at BLS Library's Circulation Desk + hours when students can obtain help from the reference librarian "on duty."
  • The publisher of National Security Law = Aspen Publishing.  Aspen created a BLS-specific purchase portal 
    • Tip: At Aspen's portal, BLS students need to "Register" with a BLS email address and to select "Brooklyn Law School" as their schoolAfter a BLS student creates an account, Aspen will email the student a code to verify the account.  (If you do not receive the code, please check your Junk folder.)  This BLS Library guide box links to instructions for BLS students to take advantage of Aspen's complimentary three-week temporary ebook access to current editions of Aspen's textbooks.
    • When logged in to Aspen's portal, BLS students also can obtain a 20% discount and free shipping on orders of National Security Law.  Purchase of National Security Law from Aspen should include immediate access to a "connected ebook."

Tip: Apply here for a New York Public Library card to have home access to subscription databases such as the extensive, searchable Digital National Security Archive (vendor: ProQuest) and the searchable archive: U.S. Declassified Documents Online (vendor: Gale).
