Links to subscription resources need to be formatted with a special OpenAthens prefix. This is called "Athenizing" links. The BLS OpenAthens prefix is:

What links should be Athenized?

All links that point to subscription databases and resources will need to be updated, such as proprietary indexes, electronic journals, ebooks, etc.

*Note: EBSCO, ProQuest and Gale Cengage links should not be Athenized and instead require specific suffixes. Please reach out to hannah.freeman@brooklaw.edu for assistance.

What links should not be Athenized?

Any products that already use SSO, including:

• Westlaw
• Lexis
• Bloomberg
• Checkpoint
• CALI
• BLSConnect
• SharePoint, Teams, or OneDrive
• Canvas and Panopto

Newspapers:

• NYTimes
• Washington Post
• Financial Times
• Chronicle of Higher Education

Open access or freely available resources, including:

• Government websites
• BLS' website
• Library catalog records 
• Library research guides

The image below shows the error message that results when the OpenAthens prefix is added to a freely available resources (in this case, data.gov). Remember to test all of your Athenized links to make sure they work!

Occasionally, you may find a link that needs to be specially formatted -- in other words, adding the OpenAthens prefix is not enough to make the link work. You can create these specially formatted links using the OpenAthens Link Generator.

Tips for Using the Link Generator

• Before you enter a link in the Generator, paste in into a browser to ensure proper formatting. If a link doesn't begin with http:// or https://, the Generator won't Athenize it.
• The Link Generator can Athenize up to 50 URLs at a time.
• Test any links you Athenize! If you are unable to create a working URL with the Link Generator, please let the library know using our Report an OpenAthens Issue form.
